Investing.com -- Tesla is moving forward with plans to use data from China to underpin the global development of its self-driving technology, Reuters reported on Friday, citing people with knowledge of the work.
The electric carmaking giant may also process this data within China, Reuters said. Recent efforts by Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) had reportedly focused on persuading regulators in Beijing to allow the company to transfer data generated for its "Full Self Driving" (FSD) system within China out of the country.
According to two unnamed sources, Reuters added that Tesla is also eyeing plans for a data center in China that will be needed to help train its fully autonomous vehicles.
It remained unclear if the firm would proceed with the plans for data transfer and the local data center or was developing another option, Reuters noted.
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment, Reuters said.
The report comes after Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk met with Chinese officials during a visit to the country last month. Musk spoke with Chinese Premier Li Qiang about obtaining permissions for Tesla's data transfer and also raised the potential of investing in a data center in China, sources told Reuters.
