HONG KONG/BEIJING, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Automakers in China shipped 19.3 percent more passenger cars to dealers in September from a year earlier, the official China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said.

A total of 1.21 million sedans, sport utility vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles were shipped to dealers in September, it said.

- In Asia Pacific and Africa, Ford posted record vehicle sales in September of 78,700 units, up 27 percent from a year earlier, with year to date sales up 40 percent to 651,856 units.

- Hyundai Kia's data do not include imported models.

- Volkswagen's China sales include number of cars sold in mainland China and Hong Kong.

- BMW's first nine months sales has already exceeded its full year China sales target of 120,000 units.

NOTE: General Motors [GM.UL] operates a 49-51 car manufacturing venture with top Chinese automaker SAIC Motor Corp <600104.SS> in Shanghai. It also makes mini-vans and pick-up trucks in a three-way tie-up with SAIC and Liuzhou Wuling Automobile in southern China. It has another venture with FAW Group, making light commercial vehicles.

Volkswagen makes cars in tie-ups with SAIC and FAW Group.

Ford Motor makes Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo and other sedan models in China in a three-way tie-up with Chongqing Changan Automobile Co <000625.SZ> and Japan's Mazda Motor <7261.T>. It also holds 30 percent of Jiangling Motors Corp <000550.SZ>, which makes Ford's Transit vans.

Toyota Motor <7203.T> operates car ventures with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co <2238.HK> and FAW Group in China.

Dongfeng Motor <0489.HK> also makes cars in tie-ups with Honda Motor <7267.T>, Nissan Motor <7201.T> and PSA Peugeot-Citroen .

Honda Motor makes cars in tie-ups with Dongfeng Motor Group Co <0489.HK> and Guangzhou Automobile Group Co <2238.HK>.

BYD <1211.HK> is 10 percent owned by U.S. billionaire investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway .

Daimler AG makes Mercedes-Benz models in China in partnership with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp.

SAIC operates car ventures with GM and Volkswagen . It also makes mini vehicles in south China with GM and its subsidiary Liuzhou Wuling Automobile.

Hyundai Motor Co <005380.KS> has a car venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Kia Motors Corp <000270.KS> makes cars in China in a tieup with Dongfeng Motor Group, Jiangsu Yueda Investment Co <600805.SS>.

Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd <0175.HK> is a major, homegrown private car maker. Its parent is the latest owner of the Volvo car brand.
