  • Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is turning free samples into paid ads through a new program first spotted by Axios.
  • Amazon will use its customer data to ship machine learning-tailored products from paying brand names to provide "a higher likelihood of conversion than display ads."
  • The move comes as Amazon tries to catch up with the digital ad dominance of rivals Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB).
  • Receiving unannounced samples based on customer data could raise privacy concerns. Users can opt out of the samples in their Amazon profile, but the default setting for new accounts opts into the program.
