TOKYO, May 24 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average edged higher on Tuesday after hitting a fresh five-week low, with gains in Sony Corp and construction machinery shares helping to offset worries about the euro-zone debt crisis and the U.S. economy.
The benchmark Nikkei closed the day up 0.2 percent at 9,477.17, after touching a five-week intraday low of 9,406.04 in the morning. Its drop stalled near support at its April 19 low near 9,405.
The broader Topix index gained 0.2 percent to 819.16 , having pulled up from a two-month intraday low of 812.52 earlier in the day. (Reporting by Ayai Tomisawa; Editing by Chris Gallagher)
