TOKYO, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average clawed 0.4 percent higher on Wednesday, with exporters such as Canon Inc gaining after Wall Street posted modest gains.
Confidence at big Japanese manufacturers improved further in the three months to September, the Bank of Japan's closely watched tankan survey showed, gaining for a sixth straight quarter and marking the best reading since March 2008.
The benchmark Nikkei rose 37.32 points to 9,532.58, while the broader Topix gained 0.2 percent to 844.20. (Reporting by Elaine Lies; Editing by Michael Watson)
