According to Bloomberg, Indian tycoon Gautam Adani has surpassed Jeff Bezos to become the world's second richest person.
Adani has climbed the ranking rapidly in 2022, starting the year at number 14, Bloomberg's Billionaires Index reveals. The tycoon now has a $146.9 billion fortune that is only behind Elon Musk's $260 billion.
Adani's flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd (NS:ADEL) rallied to a record this week, while Bloomberg said some of his group companies have climbed more than 1,000% since 2020.
Meanwhile, Bezos's net worth declined on Friday as tech stocks fell, hitting the fortune of the Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) founder and some of America's most wealthy.
Of course, that fall to the third spot could be fleeting, depending on how Amazon shares perform. Although they are down more than 26% in 2022.
Adani overtook India's Mukesh Ambani as the richest Asian person in February and overtook Bill Gates and France's Bernard Arnault in the past two months. Bloomberg said it's the first time someone from Asia has ranked this high in the wealth index, which is usually dominated by U.S. tech entrepreneurs.
