WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration has appointed Katie Thomson as its new chief of staff, a move that brings in a key figure from the Transportation Department as the FAA struggles with leadership vacancies.
Thomson, currently the Transportation Department's director of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will replace Jessica Sypniewski, who will become the FAA's new deputy assistant administrator of NextGen, the agency announced on Tuesday.
NextGen, short for Next Generation Air Transportation System, is the FAA's multibillion dollar modernization program for the National Airspace System.
The FAA has been without a permanent administrator since March 31, 2022.
