(Reuters) - Canada's auto sales slipped for the fourth straight month in June, declining 1.6 percent from a year earlier according to industry data released on Wednesday.

Passenger car sales declined 8 percent in June to 61,153 units, according to research DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

Meanwhile, light truck sales rose 1.4 percent to 139,003 units, accounting for about 69 percent of overall sales.

David Adams, President of the Global Automakers of Canada, said this could still be another record year for auto sales in Canada, despite certain hurdles including the tariffs imposed on imports of steel and aluminum by the Trump administration.

Higher tariffs could push up vehicle prices and so reduce sales.

"Given the current economic and political uncertainty, these sales levels are quite strong," Adams said.

General Motors Co (N:GM) said it sold 27,638 vehicles in Canada in June, up 1.8 percent from a year earlier.

Ford Motor Co (N:F) reported a 4.8 percent fall in sales to 31,179 units, while Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's (N:FCAU) sales slumped 16.5 percent, according to the DesRosiers report.
