BEIJING, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Maintaining a stable yuan is important to both the global and the Chinese economy, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Thursday.
Jiang Yu's comments, in response to a question about European calls for a stronger yuan, were a reiteration of China's long-standing defence of why it has held its exchange rate stable since the worsening of the global financial crisis in mid-2008.
The European Union's trade commissioner-designate Karel de Gucht said in Brussels on Tuesday that China should revalue the yuan to ease global trade imbalances. (Reporting by Chris Buckley; Writing by Simon Rabinovitch; Editing by Ken Wills)
