Investing.com – Sony Corp (T:6758) has partnered with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) to embed artificial intelligence capabilities into the latest Sony (T:6758) imaging chip.
The enhanced chip will have its own built-in processor and memory, allowing users to analyze video using AI such as Microsoft’s Azure, but via a faster, simpler and more secure method.
Some potential uses in the retails and logistics sectors are optimizing warehouse and factory automation, calculating customer flow through stores, and cars that are smarter about their drivers and environment. For example, detecting when a driver is falling asleep at the wheel via high-resolution video and AI analysis.
Meanwhile, personal users can use the chip to enhance their mobile photography and videography.
Amid increasing concerns about surveillance, with several countries using tracking methods to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus and enforce lockdowns, the chip will provide more privacy-conscious monitoring. It analyses the video and provides metadata without sending data to remote servers, thus dramatically reducing hackers’ ability to intercept sensitive videos or images.
Sony (T:6758)'s Japanese shares jumped 4.28% to JPY 6971($64.98) by 1:12 AM ET (6:12 AM GMT).
