WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Gina Raimondo has won the Rhode Island governor's race, defeating Republican Allan Fung, Fox projected.
Raimondo, 43, is a businesswoman who has been the state's general treasurer since 2010; Fung, 44, is mayor of Cranston. First lady Michelle Obama campaigned for Raimondo, while New Jersey Governor Chris Christie stumped in Rhode Island for Fung.
Raimondo will replace retiring Governor Lincoln Chafee, who was elected in 2010 as an independent but became a Democrat last year.
