GENEVA, Aug 31 (Reuters) - The World Trade Organisation set out levels of retaliation on Monday for Brazil in its six-year dispute with the United States over U.S. cotton subsidies.
The retaliation applied to two different sets of programmes challenged by Brazil. In the first, involving marketing loan and counter-cyclical payments, compensation can total $147.3 million a year. In the second, involving "GSM 102" payments, compensation would be $147.4 million for fiscal 2006, and set by formula in other years.
The WTO said that in certain circumstances Brazil would be able to "cross retaliate" against U.S. services and intellectual property, for instance lifting patent protection on pharmaceuticals, rather than simply raising tariffs on U.S. goods. (Reporting by Jonathan Lynn)
