BRUSSELS, Sept 15 (Reuters) - An interim ruling by the World Trade Organization on U.S. government support for Boeing should open the way for a settlement between the European Union and the United States, a European Commission spokesman said on Wednesday.

"The EU has said all along that only negotiations at the highest political level can lead to a real solution and we hope today's report provides momentum in that direction," the Commission's John Clancy said.

Both Brussels and Washington will be studying the report in detail, he said. The ruling has been handed over to the United States and European Union but has not been made public. (Reporting by Juliane von Reppert-Bismarck; Editing by Peter Graff)
