MADRID, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Spanish car sales fell 40 percent in October compared with the same month a year earlier, marking the sixth consecutive month of declines amid a severe economic slowdown, car manufacturers' association ANFAC said on Monday.
Accumulated sales for the first 10 months of the year were down 320,000, or 24 percent, from the same period a year earlier, Anfac said.
"The seriousness of market circumstances, especially the financial crisis and the lack of credit to finance durable goods purchases, together with the increase in unemployment and families' ever-decreasing disposable income, continues to reduce the purchase of vehicles," Anfac said in a statement.

Sales of large people carriers, or multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), were the worst affected, falling 61 percent, while sales of large and luxury 4X4 models declined 56 percent year-on-year. Small cars were the least affected, falling 32.4 percent.
Volkswagen was the top-selling brand with 8,365 sales followed by its subsidiary Seat. The Seat Ibiza was No.1 selling car (3,655) with the Renault Megane in second place (3,309).
The slowdown in Spanish car showrooms followed data last Thursday showing calendar adjusted retail sales fell 7.2 percent in September as high inflation, low consumer confidence and soaring unemployment hit spending on the high street. (Reporting by Manuel Maria Ruiz, editing by Swaha Pattanaik)
