BRUSSELS, Oct 5 (Reuters) - The European Union has settled its dispute with Uruguay over whisky and other spirits after the Latin American country scrapped tax measures that had curbed their imports, the EU's executive body said on Monday.
The European Commission said in a statement that Uruguay had often put European spirits into the highest excise tax category without proper justification, but had amended legislation that allowed the practice.
The Commission added that it had closed its investigation into Uruguay's taxation regime that was prompted by a complaint in 2004 by the Scotch Whisky Association.
"I am delighted that we have solved this issue without having to resort to World Trade Organisation litigation," EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton said in the statement. (Reporting by Marcin Grajewski; Editing by Dale Hudson)
