BEIJING, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China, flew to the United States on Thursday after attending the opening session of the cabinet-level Sino-American "Strategic Economic Dialogue", a central bank official told reporters.

Jin Qi, head of the PBOC's international department, gave no details of Zhou's planned meetings.

But his visit coincides with a plenary session of the Group of 30, a long-established forum for public officials and private experts to discuss international financial and economic issues.

According to the group's website, www.group30.org, its next plenary session starts on Dec. 4. and will be hosted by Timothy Geithner, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, whom President-elect Barack Obama has tapped to be his Treasury secretary.

The chairman of the Group of 30's board of trustees is former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, whom Obama has selected to head a panel of private-sector advisers. (Reporting by Langi Chiang and Eadie Chen; Writing by Alan Wheatley)
