VILNIUS, Dec 5 (Reuters) - New Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said on Friday he saw no need to borrow from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or devalue the national currency, the litas.
The head of the central bank had earlier said that Lithuania would discuss the possibility of borrowing from the Fund, though he also saw no need at the moment to borrow.
"I want to assure all rumour mongers: today I see no need to borrow from the IMF or to devalue the litas," Kubilius said, speaking at parliament when presenting his government programme.
Kubilius was speaking ahead of the official visit of an IMF mission next week. Latvia has already had to appeal for EU and IMF help. An IMF mission is due in Estonia next week as well.
"We appreciate the advice of IMF experts, and I can only regret that the former government did not pay attention to their warnings about overheating," Kubilius said. (Reporting by Nerijus Adomaitis)
