NEW YORK, March 4 (Reuters) - Mitsubishi Corp is planning to buy a stake of 34 percent in the solar power unit of Spanish contractor Acciona SA, the financial daily Nikkei said in its Thursday edition.
The paper said Mitsubishi expects to pay Acciona "several billion yen" in a transaction that could take place by the end of the month.
Acciona's solar power unit operates the world's largest photovoltaic power plant, about 200 kilometers southeast of Lisbon in Portugal. The plant has an output capacity of 45,800 kilowatts, or "enough power to supply 26,000 Japanese households year-round," Nikkei said.
The paper said: "Mitsubishi is considering broadening the partnership to fields other than photovoltaic power generation, as well as engaging in alternative-energy operations in regions outside Europe, such as Japan." (Reporting by Gerald E. McCormick; editing by Richard Chang)
