TOKYO, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Japan's trade minister said on Tuesday he will ask China to improve its exports of rare earth minerals to Japan after importers reported problems.

A ministry survey showed 31 firms had experienced problems in receiving shipments of the minerals from China, Trade Minister Akihiro Ohata told a regular news conference.

"The results of the survey are different from what China told Japan formally, so we as a government would like to ask China to resolve the issue as soon as possible," Ohata said.

Ohata said he would ask China to resolve the reported problems through diplomatic channels. He said the survey results would be sent to Japan's embassy in Beijing on Tuesday.

The survey of 152 firms, to which 66 replied, was conducted Sept. 28-30. (Reporting by Risa Maeda; Editing by Edwina Gibbs)
