NEW YORK, Sept 24 (Reuters) - China and Japan, which are embroiled in a maritime dispute, are important neighbors with key responsibilities and must cooperate with one another, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told reporters on Friday.
The two sides are locked in an increasingly heated dispute triggered by Japan's detention of a Chinese fishing boat captain whose trawler collided earlier this month with a Japanese patrol boat in waters near islands both sides claim. (Reporting by Paul Eckert; editing by Todd Eastham)
