NEW YORK, Sept 17 (Reuters) - The dollar extended gains against the yen on Thursday after data showed showed U.S. housing starts and building permits in August rose to their highest level since November.
Against the yen, the dollar edged higher to 91.49 after the data from 91.35 earlier.
The euro was last at $1.4709 after the data from $1.4710 just before.
The U.S. Labor department reported that initial state jobless benefit claims fell to 545,000 in the latest week from 550,000 in the previous week. Markets were expecting claims of 555,000. (Reporting by Nick Olivari; Editing by Theodore d'Afflisio)
