Feb 24 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Tuesday the United States had begun a new era of engagement with the rest of the world, saying the country had no more powerful force at its disposal than "the example of America." Here are some of Obama's quotes on foreign policy issues:

"AMERICA DOES NOT TORTURE"

Obama signaled a break with the controversial interrogation techniques used under his predecessor George W. Bush, repeated a promise to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba and promised "swift and certain justice" for captured terror suspects.

"Living our values doesn't make us weaker, it makes us safer and it makes us stronger. And that is why I can stand here tonight and say without exception or equivocation that the United States of America does not torture," Obama said.

The United States has faced sharp criticism from human rights groups for such methods as water-boarding, which simulates drowning, in the interrogation of suspects.

"A WAY FORWARD IN IRAQ"

Obama underscored his administration's commitment to fighting terrorism, but said this could take new forms in countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.

"I will soon announce a way forward in Iraq that leaves Iraq to its people and responsibly ends this war," Obama said.

"And with our friends and allies, we will forge a new and comprehensive strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan to defeat al Qaeda and combat extremism. Because I will not allow terrorists to plot against the American people from safe havens half a world away."

"AMERICA CANNOT MEET THREATS ALONE"

Obama said he intends to strengthen U.S. alliances and emphasize diplomacy, bringing the United States back to the negotiating table on issues ranging from nuclear proliferation to poverty alleviation.

"In words and deeds we are showing the world that a new era of engagement has begun. For we know that America cannot meet the threats of this century alone, but the world cannot meet them without America."

Obama -- who, unlike Bush, has said he may be willing to start talks with Iran -- said Washington "cannot ignore the foes or forces that could do us harm." He promised a sustained effort to secure peace between Israel and its neighbors.

"SPUR DEMAND FOR AMERICAN GOODS"

Obama said his administration would work with countries across the world to fight the current economic crisis, and rejected protectionist trade measures.

"We are working with the nations of the G-20 to restore confidence in our financial system, avoid the possibility of escalating protectionism, and spur demand for American goods in markets across the globe," he said. (Editing by Chris Wilson)
