April 16 - Spanish farmers say plunging producer prices are forcing them to sell at below cost, plant less or give up farming altogether.
Following are some key facts about Spanish farming.
* Numbers employed: 803,800 in the fourth quarter of 2008, out of a total working population of 19.8 million.
* Agriculture accounts for about 2.5 percent of Spain's gross domestic product.
* 200,000 dairy farmers produce 6.24 million tonnes of milk a year. Consumption is 9 million and the deficit is imported.
* Unions say farm gate prices for milk have fallen by 40 percent in the last 15 months to 0.20-0.30 euros a litre.
* Grain farmers have planted 5.64 million hectares to winter wheat and barley this year, or 8.9 percent less than in 2008.
* Average wholesale wheat prices have fallen by 35 percent since the harvest last July to 132.87 euros a tonne.
* Spain produced 3.4 million tonnes of dessert oranges in 2008, 2.2 million of mandarine oranges and 690,000 tonnes of lemons.
* Producer prices of oranges have fallen by 27 percent to 0.24 euros a kilo in the past year, according to the Agriculture Ministry. Farmers say they often receive 0.18 euros.
