BRUSSELS, June 4 (Reuters) - Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker said on Thursday a possible switch of some of his responsibilities as Luxembourg finance minister did not necessarily mean he would step down as Eurogroup chairman.
"This does not necessarily imply that I will leave the presidency of the Eurogroup. It could be but it is not compulsory," he told Reuters by telephone.
"I have not announced my retirement from the Eurogroup."
Earlier, an official from his party said Juncker had told an election event in Luxembourg late on Wednesday that he would quit his finance minister post -- a move that would normally entail stepping down as chair of the 16-member Eurogroup. (Reporting by Anne Jolis; writing by Mark John)
