HANGZHOU, China, Oct 29 (Reuters) - China and the United States reiterated their opposition to protectionism at high-level talks that ended on Thursday.
The two countries also agreed that imposing curbs on Chinese exports was not the way to tackle the country's politically contentious trade surplus with the United States, Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said.
"The two have agreed that the solution to the trade gap between the United States and China is not to restrict imports from China but to promote balance," Chen told reporters through an interpreter.
Beijing and Washington further agreed that the United States would move quickly to confer market economy status on China, cooperate on piracy at sea and on agricultural and food safety issues, and move forward on U.S. certification of Chinese cooked chicken exports, Chen said.
