OTTAWA, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Canada has reached a deal with the United States to end a dispute over "Buy American" provisions that had strained ties between the two trading partners, Trade Minister Peter Van Loan said on Friday.
Canada will give U.S. suppliers access to a range of construction contracts across its provinces and territories, Van Loan said. The United States will let Canadian suppliers bid for state and local public works projects in a range of programs funded by last year's $787 billion U.S. economic stimulus measure, Van Loan said.
The U.S. Congress had included a "Buy American" mandate in the measure, requiring public works projects to use only U.S.-made products. The move angered critics in both the United States and Canada, which said it would cost jobs.
