Investing.com - Digital currency Bitcoin extended its record-setting rally in the first trading session of 2017 on Monday.
Bitcoin jumped 2.41% to $1,022 on the US-based itBit exchange, its highest level in three years.
Other exchanges such as Bitfinex and BitStamp also showed the cryptocurrency above $1,000.
The cryptocurrency rose above $1,000 for the first time since December 2012 late on Sunday.
Bitcoin outperformed all central-bank-issued currencies with a 125% climb in 2016.
Though the digital currency has historically been highly volatile it has been more stable in the past two years.
