TOKYO, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average edged up 0.3 percent on Thursday, with defensive shares such as KDDI Corp gaining after disappointing U.S. data suggested economic recovery may not be as strong as hoped. Nikon Corp was untraded and overwhelmed with sell orders after the precision equipment and camera maker warned on Wednesday its operating loss would be more than double its initial estimate this year as it wrote down the value of unsold chipmaking gear.
The benchmark Nikkei gained 30.03 points to 10,282.56, while the broader Topix rose 0.3 percent to 952.78. (Reporting by Elaine Lies)
