BRUSSELS, Feb 11 (Reuters) - The European Union will do its best to help Greece overcome its debt crisis in a sign of unity with Athens to calm markets, Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates told Reuters Insider in an interview on Thursday.
"We will do our best to help Greece overcome its problems," Socrates said.
"It is very important to give a clear sign to the markets that we have solidarity (on Greece)," he said.
Market concern over the risk of a Greek default spread in recent weeks to Portugal and Spain, whose bond yields rose.
Socrates said, however, that the risk of default by Portugal was practically nil. (Reporting by David Brunnstrom, writing by Jan Strupczewski, editing by Dale Hudson)
