Investing.com - Apple has acquired Israel's PrimeSense, a 3D motion-tracking company, in a deal worth USD345million, the Calcalist business and financial site reported on Sunday.
PrimeSense developed the hardware design and chip used to power the original Xbox 360 Kinect for Microsoft. The company provides 3D sensing products for a wide range of industries and markets, including consumer electronics, cars and medical devices. The sensors are installed in over 24 million devices worldwide.
Reports of the deal come amid speculation that PrimeSense’s 3D motion control technology could be added to Apple TV, a device designed to stream digital content to TV sets.
Calcalist said PrimeSense has raised USD85 million from Israeli and U.S. venture capital funds such as Canaan Partners Global, Gemini Israel and Genesis Partners.
The report said the deal was expected to be announced officially by both companies during the next two weeks.
"We are focused on building a prosperous company while bringing 3D sensing and natural interaction to the mass market in a variety of markets such as interactive living room and mobile devices," a spokeswoman for PrimeSense said.
"We do not comment on what any of our partners, customers or potential customers are doing and we do not relate to rumors or recycled rumors."
