NEW YORK, Aug 5 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks pared losses on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 briefly turning positive, as gains in the financial sector offset concerns about data that pointed to a slow recovery from the recession.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 39.82 points, or 0.43 percent, to 9,280.37. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 3.09 points, or 0.31 percent, to 1,002.56. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 18.62 points, or 0.93 percent, to 1,992.69.
