NEW YORK, Aug 31 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks ended lower on Monday as a sharp drop in Chinese equities added to concerns about the global economy's recovery.
Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 47.92 points, or 0.50 percent, to end unofficially at 9,496.28. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index slipped 8.31 points, or 0.81 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,020.62. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 19.71 points, or 0.97 percent, to close unofficially at 2,009.06.
Stocks gained for the month, though. The Dow climbed 3.5 percent, the S&P 500 advanced 3.4 percent and the Nasdaq rose1.5 percent. (Reporting by Caroline Valetkevitch; Editing by Jan Paschal)
