NEW YORK, Oct 20 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks extended losses on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes falling 1 percent, as disappointing housing data and a drop in commodity prices hurt materials and energy shares.
Profit-taking also weighed on stocks after gains stemming from a spate of strong corporate earnings.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 89.10 points, or 0.88 percent, to 10,003.09. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 10.45 points, or 0.95 percent, to 1,087.46. The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 21.56 points, or 0.99 percent, to 2,154.76.
