ATHENS, June 16 (Reuters) - Greece's biggest electricity producer Public Power Corp (PPC) is to hire 4,600 workers after its labour union threatened strikes if no new hirings were made.
State-controlled PPC said in a statement on Monday it would hire the new staff by the end of next year.
Public Power's labour union said on June 9 it would go on strike next month to press for 7,000 new staff to reduce the strain on current employees and cut accidents.
Labour union officials were not available for comment.
The 4,600 hirings include about 2,300 jobs that have been already advertised but not filled yet, according to PPC's statement. PPC has about 24,000 full-time employees.
PPC said it was sticking to a target of 2.2 billion euros ($3.05 billion) of cost savings under its 2009-2014 business plan. (Reporting by Harry Papachristou; Editing by Dan Lalor) ($1 = 0.7203 euro)
