Sept 14 (Reuters) - Shares in Sprint Nextel soared on Monday, boosted by a newspaper report that Deutsche Telekom was mulling a bid for the U.S. mobile operator.

-- Deutsche Telekom last week agreed a deal with France Telecom to combine their British mobile phone businesses T-Mobile and Orange to create Britain's leading mobile operator with a combined customer base of 28.4 million.

-- The Bonn-based company said in April it planned to combine its German fixed-line and wireless units into a single division to save costs.

-- Last October, Sprint announced plans to retain its customer-losing iDen network after efforts to sell it failed.
