Investing.com - The number of building permits issues in the U.S. fell less-than-expected in November, remaining near the highest level since January 2008, official data showed Wednesday.
In a report, the U.S. Commerce Department said that the number of building permits issued last month declined by 3.1% to a seasonally adjusted 1.007 million from October’s total of 1.039 million. Analysts expected building permits to fall by 4.7% to 0.990 million units in November.
The report also showed that U.S. housing starts surged by 22.7% in November to hit a seasonally adjusted 1.091 million from October’s total of 0.890 million, beating expectations for an increase to 0.950 million.
The Commerce Department delayed the release of its monthly U.S. housing starts report for September and October due to the recent government shutdown.
Following the release of the data, the U.S. dollar added to gains against the euro, with EUR/USD shedding 0.24% to trade at 1.3735.
Meanwhile, U.S. stock future indices were modestly higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average futures eased up 0.2%, S&P 500 futures pointed to a gain of 0.2%, while the Nasdaq 100 futures pointed to an increase of 0.15% at the open.
