In a report, Statistics Canada said wholesale sales fell by 0.9% in December, compared to expectations for a 1% decline.
Wholesale sales rose by 0.7% in November.
Following the release of the data, the Canadian dollar remained lower against its U.S. counterpart, with USD/CAD adding 0.11% to trade at 1.0118.
