Investing.com – The rate of unemployment in Canada rose unexpectedly in August as more people entered the labor force, official data showed on Friday.
In a report, Statistics Canada said that the rate of unemployment rose to a seasonally adjusted 8.1% in August, after increasing to 8.0% in July.
Analysts had expected the rate of unemployment to remain unchanged in August.
The report said that the number of people employed in August rose more-than-expected, increasing by a seasonally adjusted 35.8K, after declining 9.3K in July.
Analysts had expected the number of people employed to rise by 30.8K in August.
The report said that payroll employment increased by 17.6K in August while self-employment rose by 18.2K.
