Investing.com - Foreign investors’ acquisitions of Canadian securities increased more-than-expected in January, led by corporate debt instruments, official data showed on Monday.
In a report, Statistics Canada said that foreign investment increased by a seasonally adjusted CAD13.34 billion in January, compared to expectations for an increase of CAD7.85 billion.
Foreign investors’ acquisitions of Canadian securities declined by CAD1.92 billion in December.
Meanwhile, Canadian investors reduced their holdings of foreign securities by CAD1.2 billion, following four straight months of investments.
As a result, net inflows of funds from cross-border transactions in securities resumed in January, after two consecutive months of net outflows.
Following the release of the data, the Canadian dollar remained lower against its U.S. counterpart, with USD/CAD adding 0.33% to trade at 1.0228.
