Investing.com - Core retail sales in Canada fell unexpectedly in March, while total retail sales figures were flat, official data showed on Wednesday.
In a report, Statistics Canada said core retail sales, which exclude automobile sales, fell by a seasonally adjusted 0.2% in March, defying expectations for a 0.2% increase.
Core sales rose by 0.7% in February.
Total retail sales were flat in March, compared to expectations for a 0.2% gain, after rising by a downwardly revised 0.7% in February.
Following the release of the data, the Canadian remained lower against its U.S. counterpart, with USD/CAD adding 0.48% to trade at 1.0319.
