LONDON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Britain's Barclays named Stefano Marsaglia, a veteran banker at Rothschild, as chairman of its investment bank's financial institutions group (FIG).
It is the latest high profile hire by Barclays Capital as it attempts to build up one of the leading full service investment banks, building on last year's purchase of the U.S. operations of Lehman Brothers.
Italian Marsaglia, 54, joins after 17 years at Rothschild, where he was most recently co-global head of FIG and co-head of investment banking for Europe.
FIG teams advise banks, insurers and other financial services clients.
He managed Rothschild's FIG team since 2004 and worked on high profile deals for Santander, Intesa and UniCredit. Antonio Villalon is Rothschild's other co-head of FIG.
Before Rothschild, Marsaglia spent six years at UBS and four years at Morgan Grenfell, both in investment banking roles.
Other bankers to recently join BarCap include Matthew Ponsonby and Mark Warham as co-heads of European M&A; Sam Dean as co-head of global equity capital markets and Jim Renwick as head of UK equity capital markets. (Reporting by Steve Slater and Victoria Howley; editing by Simon Jessop)
