How sex blackmailers netted $0.5 million in Bitcoin
Cyber security firm Banbreach told Motherboard recently they have been monitoring Bitcoin addresses mentioned in social media posts from people targeted in a sextortion scam and have already seen over $ 500,000 of Bitcoin transferred, with the actual figures likely to be far higher.
The enterprising criminals have bought up personal passwords from the dark web from previous website breaches such as LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) and then contacted mass amounts of random targets. The ploy declares that they have breached your computer in the past, gaining control of your webcam and have compromising videos of you watching porn, then going on to demand between $2000 to $8000 in Bitcoin to destroy the videos. They go on to say they have been monitoring the victim and compiled a split screen video of what they were watching and what they were doing captured by the webcam.
