Saudi Hospital Deploys Blockchain-Based Digital Credentialing

  • Saudi hospital implements digital credentialing using blockchain.
  • The solution was developed by the hospital’s Blockchain Lab.
  • Doctors will be able to verify and manage patient credentials.

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC), a healthcare facility in Saudi Arabia, has successfully set up a digital credentialing platform for its patients. Developed through KFSHRC’s Blockchain Lab, this solution will now enable healthcare providers to access digital certificates on the blockchain.

KFSHRC first launched its Blockchain Lab in 2021. Through it, the hospital aimed to explore blockchain’s use cases in the Kingdom. They also focused on adapting this technology for healthcare purposes. The Lab was able to define several possible use cases, but this is their first successful endeavor.

“KFSHRC is proud to be an early adapter, as this technology will disrupt the healthcare model in positive ways,” said the hospital’s CEO Majed Alfayyadh.

Through this leading-edge solution, KFSHRC will be able to securely issue, manage, track and verify hospital credentials. And all this will be accomplished in a much quicker, more effective, and accessible manner. Doctors will receive a secure email that helps them view verified credentials on the blockchain. Additionally, they can even download it directly to their digital mobile wallets.

The discussion around digital patient identities is not new. Most conservations have centered around the benefit this technology has for patients. People’s healthcare information is often fragmented and dispersed among several healthcare systems. And this causes considerable inconvenience. So, having personal and coverage information at any time, and in any phase of care creates a hassle-free experience. It also protects data from theft. Additionally, blockchain makes matters a lot easier for healthcare professionals and insurance providers.

On the whole, the management of the facility is ecstatic about the fact that theirs is the first institution in the country to adopt this innovative and highly beneficial technology.
