Gaming Giant SEGA Could Use NFTs in SuperGame After Doubts Last Year

  • SEGA could integrate NFTs in its cornerstone project SuperGame.
  • An executive of the company said future gaming that involves new tech such as NFTs is “natural.”
  • After previous doubts about NFTs, the company registered a trademark for “SEGA NFTs.”

SEGA has revealed more details about its five-year plan and could involve NFTs after shelving plans to experiment with NFTs last year, according to an interview posted on their recruitment page involving members of SEGA’s top management.

Talking about SEGA’s SuperGame — the company’s “cornerstone” of its five-year plan — Producer Masayoshi Kikuchi said that “games have a history of expansion through the connection of various cultures and technologies.” He cited social networking and live streaming as examples.

It is natural for the future of gaming to expand by involving new fields such as cloud gaming and NFT.

Kikuchi added that they are also experimenting on their SuperGame and how far various titles can be linked to one another.

In November 2021, SEGA initially said it was planning to involve NFTs in its developments. However, the plan was halted due to the negative reactions of fans. The gaming community then thought that the plan was a money-making scheme.

Much earlier in the same year, the company shared that it plans to release a SuperGame within five years. At the time, it was believed that SuperGame was a single title. During the interview, it was revealed to be otherwise.

“We have development of AAA titles that cross over SEGA’s comprehensive range of technologies,” explained Executive Vice President Shuji Utsumi. “We will aim to achieve this in our five-year plan.”

Expounding further, Utsumi said that the various titles are currently in the works within the SuperGame framework, and they will be “interactive titles that go beyond the traditional framework of games.” The company is also planning to explore live streaming as they try to create “new entertainment.”

Utsumi said that a SuperGame title should be a multi-platform, global multi-language development, simultaneous worldwide release, and AAA title. Meanwhile, SEGA General Manager Katsuya Hisai shared that teams are already working on the initial phases of the project, and SuperGame is already well on its way.

Apart from the NFT integration, the company could also incorporate cloud technology in its SuperGame.

It can be remembered that the Japanese gaming giant registered a trademark for SEGA NFT in December 2021 that included the SEGA NFT logo despite prior doubts about its future plans.
