Encrypted email services provider Tutanota announced it had begun accepting donations in cryptocurrencies, with users having the option to give Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash, and Monero. In a blog post, the German-based company also said it was in the process of adding support for cryptocurrency payments and testing payment processing.
The cryptocurrencies were selected after users voted in a poll. Tutanota is open to more suggestions, saying in its post:
“Over the past few years, we came to realize that there is not only a demand for enabling Bitcoin payments but for other currencies as well.”
For now, cryptos can only be used for donations while Tutanota tests options for accepting and automatically processing cryptocurrency transfers. The company plans to allow payments for its pro and premium services at a later stage.
“We at Tutanota have always been in support for cryptocurrencies because we welcome the idea of a decentralized payment method that works independent of centralized payment processors such as banks or credit card institutions,” the post read.
Tutanota’s anonymous and encrypted email service is mostly intended for people with sensitive activities, such as journalists, whistleblowers, and human rights activists. Such individuals need extra protection, so the option of making anonymous payments with anonymous currencies would be very convenient, the company noted.
Plans to add the cryptocurrency payments option were outlined last year, but Tutanota has been busy rebuilding its encrypted email client to improve performance, design, and add new features at a faster pace.
Tutanota offers a free encrypted email client in web and mobile versions. The solution automatically encrypts the email content, the contacts, the subject line, and even the attachments.
