Blockchain-focused collectibles website CryptoKitties has teamed up with digital assets distributor and creator AppMoji and two-time National Basketball Association (NBA) most valuable player (MVP) Stephen Curry to bring sports memorabilia to the blockchain.
Under the deal, Curry auctioned off on Monday one of three special-edition CryptoKitties through a personal crypto wallet. Ten highly-coveted CryptoKitties were given away during the auction in celebration of the partnership. More Curry collectibles are expected to go on offer soon.
Mack Flavelle, co-founder of CryptoKitties, said the Exclusive Cats are a tribute of sorts to Curry’s interests on and off the court. He added:
"Stephen is the perfect partner to try out this new kind of Kitty. He's an incredible athlete, but also has a deep interest in technology and innovation.”
Curry is known as an athlete active in the tech community. He is the first ever sports personality to team up with a blockchain-based game through his involvement with Moji (AppMoji).
CryptoKitties quickly gained popularity since its launch in late 2017, with some cats sold for more than $100,000. The group expects Curry's collectibles to be in high demand by sports fans.
Athletes on crypto
With the launch of the Curry CryptoKitties, the Golden State Warriors marquee player joins a growing number of athletes who have ventured into blockchain and cryptocurrencies.
Philippine boxing legend-turned-politician Manny Pacquiao announced last month he would push ahead with the launch of his digital currency, the PAC Coin.
In September 2017, former boxing pound-per-pound king Floyd Mayweather tweeted that he was supporting Centra Token’s initial coin offering ((ICO) in an apparent endorsement of the token.
Early this year, two-time world record holder in speed skating Ted-Jan Bloemen of Canada signed a sponsorship deal with ONG Social and CEEK VR, a deal that will see him collect some of his compensation in cryptocurrency.
Bloemen commented at the time:
"I'm excited to step into the future with ONG and CEEK. Their progressive approach to social media and VR paired with cryptocurrencies bring a whole new perspective. A perspective that, I believe, has a lot of potentials!"
