Russia may be a bit ambiguous on how it views cryptocurrencies, but that hasn’t stopped three universities in the country from offering courses related to digital coins, with two of them even going as far as offering degree programs based on blockchain technology.
The universities in question are Voronezh State University (VSU), Novosibirsk State University (NSU), and Don State Technical University (DSTU).
We’ll first look at the offer from VSU, which reached the Russian press on Friday. The university will be offering a full bachelor’s program called “Models and methods for analyzing the digital economy.”
“The program [will involve] in-depth training in the use of modern information technology analysis and support for decision-making, digital economy and blockchain technology,” the university said in its announcement. VSU’s long-term goal is apparently to eventually integrate this program into its economics curriculum.
DSTU ups the ante on VSU and now offers two full masters programs for training in blockchain technologies.
“Within two years, students will master courses on intelligent information systems, distributed technologies, cryptocurrency, crypto exchanges, cybersecurity, and the digital economy,” a report from the university’s press office said.
One of the master courses will be dedicated to blockchain technology. The other one will be a part of the digital accounting program.
NSU’s offer is similar to DSTU, offering courses on blockchain technology within its new Master in Cryptography program. In its course list, it includes “Blockchain: math, problems, and applications” as one of the courses.
Only DSTU’s courses make any mention of cryptocurrencies or exchanges, and this may be for a reason. For a while, cryptocurrency legislation in Russia has been in limbo. Recent government reports show that cryptocurrency regulation in the country might not appear before autumn this year, despite being far past the deadline set up by RF president Putin late last year.
This is a problem for universities that want to establish courses for their students. To properly teach people about cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, there needs to be some measure of predictability in the legislative environment. The fact that Russian universities are even doing this is an encouraging development as far as the status of cryptocurrencies in the country is concerned.
