Andreas Brekken, CEO of controversial anti-bitcoin media shitcoin.com, became the biggest node ever on the Lightning Network after opening channels worth $50,000 which resulted in a 15% of the whole network’s capacity. This sparked a heated discussion on Reddit, where Brekken himself posted a comment saying a “review is coming”.
As of the writing of this article, his node has doubled in size to 101 channels worth $95,000, with 29% control of the whole network.
On Twitter, Brekken was named “King of Nodes” by Fulmo, a Lightning Network research startup. Subsequently, the tweet was upvoted on the Bitcoin subreddit, with redditors speculating the intent of his actions, with some speculating it might be an advertising campaign.
A Reddit user noticed a tweet from Brekken which was has since been deleted. “What would you like to see in a shitcoin.com review of Lightning Network?” said the tweet, before listing several steps.
“That’s me,” answered Brekken under the alias /u/BitcoinArtist, and later added “No spoilers! Will announce when my review is completed.”
The site shitcoin.com is an altcoin ranking and review platform that buys ICO tokens and tests the software. It often criticizes ICOs and cryptocurrencies for false and misleading advertising. The name “shitcoin” comes from a pejorative which, according to Investopedia’s dictionary, describes an altcoin that has lost its value for any number of reasons. In 2017, BitMEX writer Arthur Hayes used the term to criticized SegWit2x, calling it “ShitCoin2x”.
This is not the first time Brekken has been critical of Lightning Network. In May, he criticized Blockstream for requiring users to “understand how the protocol and payment channels work and this involves knowledge from fields like cryptography, security, game theory, economics, and more”.
“Sell your BTC”, urged Brekken his followers.
