NEW YORK, Sept 25 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks turned flat on Friday as a bounce in energy shares offset a weaker-than-expected August new home sales report.
* Energy shares headed higher in tandem with crude oil prices. U.S. front-month crude was up 1.6 percent at $66.90 a barrel.
* The Dow Jones home construction index was off 1.7 percent after the U.S. Commerce Department said new home sales rose 0.7 percent to a 429,000 annual pace in August. That was below market expectations for a 440,000 unit rate.
* The Dow Jones industrial average gained 20.78 points, or 0.21 percent, to 9,728.22. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 1.99 points, or 0.19 percent, to 1,052.77. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 3.57 points, or 0.17 percent, to 2,104.04.
