Investing.com - Core retail sales in Canada fell unexpectedly in June, while total retail sales figures also declined, official data showed on Thursday.
In a report, Statistics Canada said core retail sales, which exclude automobile sales, fell by a seasonally adjusted 0.8% in June, confounding expectations for a 0.1% increase.
Core sales rose by 1.1% in May, whose figure was downwardly revised from a previously reported 1.2% gain.
Total retail sales declined by a seasonally adjusted 0.6% in June, compared to estimates for a 1% decline, after rising by 1.8% in May.
Following the release of the data, the Canadian dollar remained lower against its U.S. counterpart, with USD/CAD adding 0.38% to trade at 1.0511.
